Please add vertical reading for asian characters.
Saw this app in the App Store this morning and I had to download it.
Ive used OCR software in the past, but I had hoped that my experience with this app would be better...
So first, I tried scanning a page out of a novel I had on hand. Although there were a lot of "? ^ I?" stuck it hazardously in the text, this OCR did manage to read nine out of ten words, which really wasnt too bad. For simple, digitalizing english print functions, I would give it 3, 3.5 stars.
The real problem started when I tried to read a manga using TextGrabber. Which was my main goal when I downloaded this. It would be much more convenient if I could use this to scan and translate text without having to look up individual kanji using the furigana.
Except it didnt work. "Unable to recognize the image." I tried again. And again. I made sure that I cropped the image so only the text was there. Nada.
Also, I noticed that there isnt a vertical reading option for languages where vertical text is normal. Most manga use vertical text bubbles at least once in a few panels, so that makes TextGrabber that much more useless to me (if, you know, it could properly scan Japanese in the first place). This is a definite strike against this app, as the more advanced phone OCR apps implement this option.
(East Asian scripts read up to down, and then moves right to left between columns, so please take that into account for the vertical reading option.)
Adding a translation option to the standard OCR was a good idea. This app does have a lot of potential, and I look forward to improvement in future updates. But as it functions now, two stars is an accurate rating.
